THERE ARE NO RULES
There are no rules limiting how you use this universe and its species.
I want the New Bestiary to not be one thing but to be iterated on as much as others like. I enjoy the concept of alternative universes, original characters, and fan projects, and I don’t feel the need to bar away these things. I think treating these things the way Games Workshop or Nintendo does squanders fanbases, scares people away from enjoying your works their way, and threatens innovation with things like copyright laws and patents.
You can write fanfiction. You can draw my characters. You can make your own OCs and put them in this universe. You can create an AU in an entirely different genre with different species. You can slap another universe on top of mine.
Same goes for the species I make! You’re free to make characters and sell them. You’re free to use them outside of the context of the New Bestiary, too. You can make bases using these species, and either give them out for free or put them behind a paywall.
I’d say don’t limit yourself by trying to wrap your writing into mine. If you think your story is better as its own thing, make it it’s own thing! Don’t be afraid to turn fanwork into its own thing. At the same time, I’m not going to bring you to financial ruin just because you make and sell Zhhanun fursuits. Ideas are overrated and mine are no different.
I want this to belong to everyone. Not to me, not to someone else. Level one is me deciding what the New Bestiary is. Level two is you all deciding what it will be. There is no canon in the New Bestiary. Only headcanons, AUs, and the cheer of furries.
Let me get more specific, perhaps to give you ideas:
WHAT IF PEOPLE MAKE BAD THINGS WITH THIS?
I don’t know, what if people make good things with this? What if some studio spends millions of dollars making a movie based on the New Bestiary, only for some guy living in a basement to make a 5 minute film that gets all the attention instead?
Let me be clear: my support entirely goes to independent creators, not to behemoth corporations, who use what I’m doing here to express themselves truly. The lack of rules is to make sure, no matter what people do to what I make, someone can always pick it all up and make something that shines. I will do whatever I can to keep it that way.
People do great things when other people enable them. I hope you use my stuff to make something great.
MAKE MONEY
I don’t feel compelled to keep you from making money off of fan stuff. I will be fine– more than fine, even. I don’t want to make a million dollars even if I “deserve” it. If you made something that rocks, I’d rather you get that money.
This applies big and small. If you made a cool character design and want to sell it, do that! If you want to make an RPG and profit off of that, also do that! If you want to make a business selling miniatures for the New Bestiary, that’s oddly specific… but do that!
MAKE CHARACTERS
This is the most obvious use case. In fact, I think this is what I started the New Bestiary for; it started as something people could use to make their own OCs.
Feel entirely free to make your own character. Put them wherever you’d like. Do they not make sense in the lore I’ve written? Add to it so that it does! Or make your own!
I WANT TO WORK WITH YOU
I’m not here for free, but if I really like what you make I’d be more than happy to help you out! I’m but one person working on this.
ANATOMY ISN’T SACRED
For the sake of depicting my world as being overwhelmingly dark, I usually keep my anatomy pretty grounded. But don’t feel compelled to do the same, if you don’t want to! Make ’em pear shaped! Make their fur neon! Make taurs! Give them wings! Do weird things to their bodies!
If you want to slap the name Thanun on a completely different looking species, do that! I like seeing people reinterpret species– especially when that interpretetation is completely different from how they’re normally depicted. Do as you wish.
THE TIMELINE ISN’T SACRED
Look, I understand that giving furries a grimdark universe is like putting a Micro Center in a rural town. It’s not going to interest a lot of people. Which is why you’re especially allowed to throw lore out of the window! Put my characters in a cozy city, they’d appreciate it.
DO AS YOU WISH TO THEM
I do evil things with this universe and I’m not going to stop you from doing the same. I ask that you don’t tell me, though? Your brand of evil is going to be different from mine, and if it isn’t then I’ll probably find it my own way.
OK, BUT WHAT’S ACTUALLY LORE-FRIENDLY?
The most helpful answer I can give is “ask me”. The most accurate would be “nothing”.
Again, there is no canon. I have a specific idea for what the New Bestiary is, and what its species are and arent, but I’m just one voice. If you want to fit your story into mine, ask me and I might answer. If you want to fit it into someone else’s, ask them!
